@Ohluwamayowa: How to deal with the fear of the unknown (Y! Superblogger)

In the few years I have spent on Earth so far… I have seen that many people suffer from the fear of the unknown.

This fear, often times, keeps us from reaching out for things we truly want. It keeps us tied to one spot… it cripples us.  If care isn’t taken, the fear of the unknown may rob one of the future, of joy, bliss… love and life in general.

I remember when I finished my course at the Redeemer’s University, I was so reluctant to leave the hostel. I stayed back for several days, even when others had left. I was so afraid.

Afraid, because ‘ certainty’ was no more. I didn’t know what was next. I couldn’t tell what direction my life would take. All the people I had made friends with will have to go their own way. I would have to leave an environment I had come to love and know for four years and head into the “unknown”.

Life was going to change, and for the life of me, I couldn’t tell what it was changing into!

At many other stages of my life, I have experienced fear. As someone who loves planning and ” knowing things”, it is never easy to walk blindfolded. It is never easy to just take the next step, having faith that my feet will touch solid ground.

In short, “not knowing” is ” not easy”.

So, how did I overcome this fear? Simple, I lived one day at a time.

The hard truth is, we will never always know what lies ahead of us. You will never know if you will get that job, or if that lady or man will return your affections, or if things will work out as planned… BUT, we must not allow the fear of things we do not know to rob us of our chance at happiness.

Although, you can’t tell what’s ahead of you, you also can’t tell where your big breaks would come from so don’t stop trying. Don’t stop living.

My remedy for this fear is to take each day as it comes. If I try to figure it all out, I may get overwhelmed and discouraged. So one day at a time. Step by step. Perhaps slowly, but steadily… one is sure to win!
